Volkswagen DSG Transmission

The Direct-Shift Gearbox, usually abbreviated as DSG, is the name that Volkswagen uses for its double-clutch transmission system. Available on many of its performance vehicles, the Volkswagen DSG transmission is a superb piece of advanced technology that delivers a memorable driving experience. Understanding the Volkswagen DSG Transmission

The DSG transmission is a unique design that combines the best of both manual and automatic transmissions. Two distinct clutches are used to engage and disengage the gears, without the need for a torque converter. This allows the DSG system to pre-select the next gear before the driver makes the shift, enabling almost instantaneous changes.

As well as being more responsive, the rapid gear changes improve fuel efficiency and deliver rapid acceleration with smooth execution.

How Does the DSG Transmission Work?

There is no clutch pedal for drivers to operate with a DSG transmission. Instead, drivers have the option to run the car in either automatic or manual mode. In the former, the car will select the most appropriate gear for the current driving conditions, just like a regular automatic car. In the latter, drivers can take a more active role, using paddle shifters or the gear lever to choose their preferred gear.

Each of the clutches has responsibility for alternate gears, one for odd-numbered gears and the other for even. This allows them to work in tandem. As one clutch engages a gear, the other clutch preselects the next, preparing the car for a rapid gear change. As the second clutch engages, the first one disengages, allowing the transition to be completed quickly.

How Much Maintenance Does a DSG Transmission Require?

Like any other type of transmission, DSG cars require routine maintenance. When serviced regularly, the DSG transmission can deliver excellent durability. The primary tasks include:

  • Changing the filters
  • Topping off and/or changing fluids
  • Checking the battery
  • Monitoring the cooling system
  • Checking the electrical system

Gear shifts are managed by electronic control units, which is why the battery and electrical system are so vital for a DSG transmission. The transmission can also get quite hot, so the cooling system plays a vital role.

Is a DSG Transmission Right For Me?

The DSG transmission offers a very distinct driving experience which is particularly well-suited to performance vehicles. However, you don’t need to be a thrill-seeker to appreciate the many advantages it offers, such as improved fuel efficiency and faster responses in stop-start traffic conditions. If you would enjoy the opportunity to control your gear changes at times while letting the car do the work at others, a DSG transmission could be for you.

There’s no substitute for climbing behind the steering wheel and trying it out for yourself. We think you’ll love the DSG transmission, so visit us here at Tom Bush Volkswagen in Jacksonville, FL to take one of our DSG-equipped vehicles for a spin.
