Understanding the Volkswagen DSG Transmission

The DSG transmission is a unique design that combines the best of both manual and automatic transmissions. Two distinct clutches are used to engage and disengage the gears, without the need for a torque converter. This allows the DSG system to pre-select the next gear before the driver makes the shift, enabling almost instantaneous changes.

As well as being more responsive, the rapid gear changes improve fuel efficiency and deliver rapid acceleration with smooth execution.

How Does the DSG Transmission Work?

There is no clutch pedal for drivers to operate with a DSG transmission. Instead, drivers have the option to run the car in either automatic or manual mode. In the latter, drivers can take a more active role, using paddle shifters or the gear lever to choose their preferred gear.

Each of the clutches has responsibility for alternate gears, one for odd-numbered gears and the other for even. This allows them to work in tandem. As one clutch engages a gear, the other clutch preselects the next, preparing the car for a rapid gear change. As the second clutch engages, the first one disengages, allowing the transition to be completed quickly.
