In late October, Volkswagen of America, Inc. proudly announced that the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta sedan was named a finalist for the 2019 Green Car of the Year® award that's handed out by Green Car Journal. According to the publication, the prestigious honor is given to the vehicle that its editors believe increase environmental performance while also remaining within financial reach for the majority of consumers.

The 2019 Jetta features a 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injected TSI® engine that generates peak torque at a low 1,400 rpm and features an air-to-water heat exchanger that cuts down on how far exhaust gases need to travel to reach the turbocharger -- providing a faster response. Variable valve timing and a 10:1 compression ratio also help increase the engine's efficiency, which is evident by the EPA-estimated 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway/34 mpg combined.

Even though the engine is more efficient, the Jetta remains a joy to drive. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, allowing you full control over your gear changes, with an eight-speed automatic transmission available if you spend a great deal of time in stop-and-go traffic.

In a press release, Derrick Hatami, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and After Sales for Volkswagen of America, Inc., was quoted as saying, "We’re so pleased to be selected as a finalist for the Green Car of the Year award. This further validates the Jetta as an exceptionally competitive offering in the compact sedan segment, where efficiency is top of mind."
