The word and measurement of horsepower was originated is the 18th century by James Wyatt, a Scottish engineer. The term was originally used for stem engines to compare output power measured by draft horses.

The horses pulled carts of coal, which they used to measure how much power you could get in a minute. Wyatt found that, a mining pony can pull 22,000 foot-pounds of work in a minute. He increased the power by 50 percent and peaked the measurement of horsepower at 33,000 pounds of work in one minute. Over time its made its way down through centuries and now is a part of your cars, lawn mowers, or even vacuum cleaners.
